At Breakfast, Drink to Your Health
For many, eating breakfast means placing an order at a
drive-through window. Some people even drink their breakfasts. But downing two shots of espresso mixed with vanilla syrup, caramel and chocolate sauce, then topped with whipped cream not only gives you as many calories as some ice cream sundaes, but also sets you up to crash before noon.
Without the add-ons, coffee isn't bad for you. In fact, several studies suggest that drinking
coffee offers health benefits.
Drinking coffee makes people
less likely to develop diabetes, Parkinson's disease and heart disease. It also boosts concentration and athletic ability.
That said, it's important to get your coffee in a healthy way -; that five-shot banana split java mocha extra-whip concoction you invented to test your barista won't do your body any good. If you want the same taste as a designer espresso drink without the fat, sugar and calories, you can make your own coffee-based shakes at home, where you control the ingredients. If you're in a rush, look for prepared coffees in your grocery store.
One company, NBI Juiceworks, makes a line called Sun Shower Super Blends. The drinks come in four flavors, Iced Coffee, Mocha Cappuccino, Chai Tea Latte and Chocolate Raspberry Frappe. Unlike coffee shop drinks, each serving contains only 70 calories, not to mention antioxidant vitamins A, E and B3, calcium, magnesium, zinc and nonfat milk. Eat a banana or an apple with your coffee, and you will enjoy a healthy, protein-rich breakfast that will keep you full until lunch.
